I know that you have a page with information regarding use with Cloudflare. However, I’m still confused.

    1. I realize, because I only have a free Cloudflare account, that I cannot utilize the SSL cert provided by my web hosting. So, does that mean Really Simple SSL plugin is not doing anything for me? I ask because it seems that Cloudflare users have no choice but to use CF’s universal cert.

    2. The Cloudflare settings such as Strict, Full Strict, Flex, etc.. seem to work differently than what you’ve recommended. My website was down for awhile because I had it set to Flex. Once I changed it back to Full Strict it was back up again. But I’m not really sure if the plugin factored into this problem or not.

I guess I’m asking if it makes sense to use Really Simple SSL IF I only have a free CF account and (if so) what is the best configuration.

It very confusing! Any advice would be appreciated!

    Hi,

    1) Really Simple SSL is not a certificate itself but a tool to configure your website for SSL. It can work with any certificate, including a universal CloudFlare certificate. Upon activation, the plugin updates your home- and site-url to https://, adds a 301 redirect to https:// and the built-in mixed content fixer automatically updates internal links to use https:// as well. Without Really Simple SSL you would still have to do these things manually to move the site to SSL.

In regards to the settings, we recommend to enable the 301 .htaccess redirect if your site uses an .htaccess file. The .htaccess redirect is the most reliable and fastest.

    2) The CloudFlare full/flexible options depend on the type of certificate used and server configuration. See https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/200170416-What-do-the-SSL-options-mean- for more information about the different SSL options in Cloudflare.
