user profile broken if wp is not installed at root

I have wp multisite installed under a sub directory.

https://{hostname}/{subdir}/user/admin/ works, but clicking on posts or comments in the page tries to go to
https://{hostname}/{subdir}/{subdir}/user/admin/?profiletab=comments
https://{hostname}/{subdir}/{subdir}/user/admin/?profiletab=posts
which of course leads to an error

same issue when a user click on the link to add information to their profile.

For subsites
https://{hostname}/{subdir}/{subsite}/user/admin/ works but links go to
https://{hostname}/{subdir}/{subsite}/{subdir}/{subsite}/user/admin/?profiletab=comments
https://{hostname}/{subdir}/{subsite}/{subdir}/{subsite}/user/admin/?profiletab=posts

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.
