    Hello,

I have been doing website speed tests using https://tools.pingdom.com/ . My website, https://greenhillcbd.co loads in about 1 second from Washington DC. However, when I test the speed of https://www.greenhillcbd.co , it loads in about 3.5 seconds from the same location.

I know that it should take longer when using www because the site has to be forwarded to the secure site (https), however should that process take 2.5 seconds? That seems like a long time. Are there any settings that I can change to decrease the load times here? Note that I’m also using a CDN; I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

    Thank you!

    Hi @thedstrat,

Can you enable the .htaccess redirect in settings/ssl? That should help.

    Hi Rogier,

Thanks for getting back to me. I had that enabled when running the tests, along with “Mixed content fixer” and “Enable WordPress 301 redirect”. Do you have any other ideas?

The .htaccess redirect redirects only from http to https. If you experience speed issues for other redirect types, you could also add a .htaccess redirect from www to non www. I’d recommend to do this from https:// to https://, and from https://www to https:// separately.

For more information, see this article:
    https://really-simple-ssl.com/knowledge-base/avoid-landing-page-redirects/

As it’s a 301 redirect, I wouldn’t worry too much about it: Google will show only the end point of these redirects, so most users will never get this redirect.

Maybe you also have some settings in your cdn for this purpose.

Hi, I have just installed the plugin “ReallysimpleSSL” and my website has literally come to a grinding halt.

pages are taking approx. 10 to 13 seconds to load! Prior to adding SSL the site was loading extremely quickly 1 to 2 seconds at the most.

Any suggestions please as to what has gone wrong ?

Hi, I have just followed the instructions in the link above my response

    https://really-simple-ssl.com/knowledge-base/avoid-landing-page-redirects/

I edited the htaccess file and now I am having pages not found errors. I have re uploaded the back up copy of the htaccess file I edited but still having issues.

    Hi @cleverdogdesign,

do you still have access to the backend of your site? If so, you could try to re-save the permalinks. That will usually fix any 404 errors related to your .htaccess file. Once the 404 errors have been fixed, could you try to enable the .htaccess redirect option in the Settings->SSL->Settings tab to see if that improves your sites speed?

Additionally, if you post your .htaccess edits here we can take a look. Possibly there’s an error there.
