Yes, I too restored my site from backup. I plan to try again on a separate WP installation that’s less critical, and will try the php.ini idea if necessary.

I’ve been using WP since version 1, & this is the first time we’ve had a serious issue — or at least one that took more than a quick search thru the forums to solve. I’m still unclear whether it was something with the 3.2.1 version or if it is my own server configuration that’s the problem — which is worrying.

I’m using a Mac box, OS 10.5 as my server — this could also be an issue. In the WWW directory, I can’t find any .htaccess file — hidden or otherwise so I’m giving up and restoring the HD from backup.

I will keep monitoring this thread tho’ if anyone else comes up with a solution.

Unfortunately, I’ve tried all of that — except the .htaccess issues (I’ve been lucky and have never had to play with this — there’s no .htaccess file in the web root directory, but may be one somewhere relating to apache).

The entire WP 3.2.1 installation (plugins, themes etc) was deleted and replaced with a fresh download of WP 3.2 (no plugins, no 3rd party themes). The DB is the same, however, so I’m imagining it’s corrupted OR there’s a permissions issue with the files, but I’m getting no errors, just a blank page.

It is my own server box and I have direct access to the HD. Not sure how to access the server log, but will investigate. Worse comes to worse, I can restore the entire HD from backup, but I’d really like to know how to troubleshoot it.

— I fixed it but only by a work around — I’ve no idea why it didn’t work first time round.

What I did to fix it was:
— delete the database tables that included the garbled characters
— increase the upload limits on php.ini (this was the hard part because of server access, but at last we did it)
— re-import the original articles etc from an exported WP file

Using an exported WP xml file worked
Using an exported SQL file didn’t work.

I hope this might be of use to people with similar issues in the future.

I lost access to my media uploader after the 2.8 upgrade and waited patiently for the 2.8.1 upgrade, but a simple install didn’t fix it. I’m now about to attempt a complete re-install.

First time this or any other problem has ever happened with WP.

Since upgrading to 2.8 I also can’t get the Upload/Insert buttons to work — clicking on them does absolutely nothing.

This morning I did a complete re-install and it works. My guess is I had a missing file due to an FTP problem (if anyone comes up against this again).

No, misunderstanding. I simply cannot change the theme away from the standard Kubrick theme. Clicking on other themes (which appear on the Design page ok) does nothing. So I can’t see the blog with any other theme. Simply can’t change it. Editing it, however I do it, comes later!

Any ideas?

Erm… no that’s a feature not a problem ;). The domain is provided by the university, so no www involved here (not that I know anything about the technical side of this.) So, I need to take the question elsewhere I guess.

Turning off the rich text editor makes only a tiny difference. I must say that the front end — actual blog — runs MUCH MUCH slower in WP 2.0.

Again, is anyway to improve this? You can probably see what I mean yourself. Is it the use of non-English characters:

I’m probably being thick again, but I’ve tested it on several client machines and they’re all the same. The URLs look fine in the Source code. What could it be!?!?

I fixed it. How? I deleted ALL the tables and re-ran the install. No problems at all!! Yea!

For reference for others: I also reinstalled phpMyAdmin to the latest version. I also used the standard table prefix. (I’ve no idea if these steps helped.)

Also: confession. I screwed up my attempt to upgrade and only later realized why: I didn’t remember to delete the ‘index.php’ file!!!!!! My guess is others might make the same mistake (although possibly it’s just me).
