I did empty all caches after I changed the page cache method; however, it was still serving the cached page.

Going in via FTP and deleting that file is what it took to get the homepage back to serving fresh.

Do you know if I will need to do that each time I want to clear the cache, or if this was just a remnant of another setting?

In case you haven’t found the solution…

You’re probably uploading large file sizes and your server is choking in trying to process them. If you reduce your file sizes to something management on shared hosting, like say a 1024 width, the plugin should work with no problems.
