How often one should upgrade?

My site was setup by somebody else, and I have been learning to maintain it. It says that I am using WP 3.2.1, and told me to upgrade to the latest WP 3.3.2.

Since I am still learning, I feel nervous about upgrading it. Can I upgrade it, say, once a year? I am using Cleancorp theme.
