PS you don’t need a multisite to do this, multisite is way to complicated for such a simple task. A custom menu is all you need.

You can just add categories to a custom menu, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Yes, you can easily achieve this with a custom menu. You might wanna link to a category page, eg https://www.yoursite.com/category/cat1.

That way, you can just orden your posts into categories and the category page will only show posts in that category.

If you use a custom menu, you can just insert any hyperlink into the menu (so you can just insert the hyperlink to the subsite as a menu item). Is that what you mean?

I’m using the network wide plugin, each menu item is a subsite.

I would like to give the current menu item a different style, but since the menu item is a seperate website it doesn’t have a current page or current menu item class. How can I fix this?

I also had a problem with the authorize new account button, it gave a time out error. I solved it by copying the hyperlink behind the button and paste in directly in the browser adress window, then it works fine.
