Thanks guys. I am a little surprised (really, not really) that this is not a core feature.

Ok, so I found the answer in another thread:

The from needs to have your actual email address from your domain (so [email protected]). If the error message was actually that (instead of “syntax error”) that might be much more helpful.

Now I have to get it to work, because I changed it, tested it, but never got my form submission. Time to check with my host.
