yes there is a way and its included in next major Update with lot of other cool features.

I didn’t add that in initial release because it will slow down the site if someone has shared hosting and lot of members.

Try writing a custom query using $wpdb object to query database for post name and id only which will take less time to load data as compared to complete post data for 3000+ posts.

Looks like the widget can be displayed on any page or post. for category images to display we should be on category page so that we can grab the category id and fetch image against that.

What I can do is to update the plugin so that we can get the category image by passing category id.

then you can get category from news post and pass that to the function to grab the category image.
