My error. The plugin import setting to update Role was set to “NO”.

I don’t understand your slug comment.

I imported this CSV file twice:
    username email street
GarbageGuru [email protected] Any Old Avenue

In one import I set the default to “Paid”, in the other to “Author”. The import completed successfully. The street field was updated in both cases, the role field was not updated in either case.

    Hi Javier,
I’m importing a CSV file with fields:
    user_login user_email last_name role
    GarbageGuru [email protected] Bage Paid

I’m also setting the default role to “Paid”. This import completes successfully but does not update the role field. I’ve tried username as the first field name without success.

Chad’s point is crucial. Username is a mandatory WordPress field. You could change the username login prompt to say “User Name or Email” to make it clear to your users.

I’ve found a couple of problems with forcing the username to be the email address:

    1. Remarkably, not all senior users have email addresses.
    2. Some users live together and don’t want two identical emails from every mailing.

I ask new users to enter a username that is either a genuine email address or a fake one in the form [email protected]. Seems to work.

I have a similar problem because ours is a Couples (social) Club where I need to have two people register. I have a “Join Us” page with [wpmem_form register] and below it a link to a “Register your Partner” page that has another [wpmem_form register]. The issue is that after “Join Us” succeeds for the first member, a login page is inserted after the welcome message and before the “Register your Partner” link. I would like to get rid of the login page.

You seem to be using WordPress and its plugins with no understanding of how plugin support works and with no attempt to rectify your ignorance. Perhaps you should do some research before you next fire off your flame thrower.

For the record, Chad is one of the most responsive plugin authors in the community, whether you pay for support or not.

    Duh!

That was it. Needed two values…

    Thanks!

    Can I get a response?

My only other option is to delete all my members and reload them, forcing them to create new passwords.

I would prefer an option that allows user_email to be changed from a CSV file.

The alternative is to delete all users except an admin and reload the user records from CSV. Not too bad but less desirable.

I had this issue and Chad told me to check the plugin that is now known as “Import and export users and customers”. It has a tab in Settings for Extra Profile Fields to be displayed or not.

Chad will give you a better answer but this is what I learned from generating usernames.

On initial load, I generated unique usernames from a member’s first name and street address and loaded them with all the user’s other details from a CSV file via the plugin “Import Users from CSV”. This process worked well for the initial load but not so well over time. The plugin has a learning curve in terms of structuring the CSV file and its column names but once past that it is great.

Existing Users forgot their usernames and had to be reminded of how it was constructed in order to log in. New users filled out a registration form and had to be instructed how to build their username.

The process was complicated because the site supports a couples club where some couples may be married and live at the same address and others are partners living at different addresses. Some share one email address, others have individual email addresses. So I decided on one member record for each member of a couple.

After a couple of years, I was spending way too much time answering log on problems. Also, because members renew annually, every January I have to deactivate non-renewers so that was a good time to re-think the process.

I made the username the member’s email address. For those without an email address (most couples don’t want two copies of every email), I created a fake email address in the form [email protected]. Since you can’t change usernames I had to delete everybody (except the Admin; that is embarrassing since it locks you out and one has to restore a backup). Then I reloaded the newly active members with their email addresses as their usernames, again using “Import Users from CSV”.

Since this is a couples club, generally one member of a couple does the data entry so this year I changed that process so that the typing member registers with their data and then repeats the registration for the second member of the couple. Much simpler…

One drawback: I have to delete the fake email addresses before creating an email blast.

Now there is no confusion. All login screens will accept the user’s email address. But guess what? They get a new email addresses and then call me to find out why they can’t log on…

I’m interested in this too. My members are couples with each individual having a member record. Some couples share an email address and others have unique emails but don’t want the same email arriving in two inboxes.

Since usernames must be unique I can’t use email addresses as a username unless I create a fake address like [email protected]. I have created usernames from their address and first name e.g. 2777firstnameStreetname.

It would still be helpful if an email address could be used in addition in all instances where username is called for, and for the prompt to say “username or email address”.

This may be unrelated but my users got a Critical 500 error about a week ago while attempting a login. Debug showed a problem with the WP Mail SMTP plugin. Deactivating the plugin solved the problem.

I haven’t had time to investigate further as I am on Jury Duty.

    Hi Chad,

This is not a new issue, nor is it critical. But since you are updating the User Profile, I have known for a long time that selecting Dashboard/Users/All Users/View a user gives ‘Nothing Found
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.”

This page link is odd: https://www.mysite.com/author/UserName I was looking to view. I have no idea where “author” comes from.

I have deleted the htaccess file and Reset Permalinks to no avail.

    Great!

That works exactly as I want it to.
