no. videos used to work in blog posts in this template, there is something wrong with my blog post template, I need to figure it out.

hey that actually worked! I have a new problem now though. don’t know if I should start a new thread for it. but the video embed code i use from youtube, will not show up in the post when published or previewed. The actual url/embed code does disappear, but for nothing. The same embed code works just fine on a ‘page’. What should I do to make it work in a post?

so I just reset the plugins folder and no change. I’ve tested this current theme in another site, and the blog page works just fine. another thing I have noticed is that the comments form for the blog posts is missing on this installation, as opposed to the other website where I tested a clean installation.

So is my solution to reinstall wordpress for this site? The other themes are doing the same thing in regards to the blog page.

would you recommend downloading phpmyadmin? or is resetting via FTP just as good? FTP method seems simpler.

i turned off all the plugins and I found that I was able to enter the previous older posts, but the newest post still sends you to the home page. I tried changing the theme to 2011, but got the same effect. I didn’t try resetting the plugins folder though… will that erase all my plugins and their settings?

Wow! Thank you for such a detailed response, I should have all the info I need to implement this now. Very much appreciated ??

Nice, that was what I was hoping. Even though I’m not totally sold on this theme, I really really like figuring out how to make things work.

So, I have to make a child theme. I suppose I should research how to do that. I should be able to search the wordpress codex for that topic correct? And then once I know how to make a child theme, then I can go in and edit it via the information provided by the link you posted.

Thanks for the direction, much appreciated ??

so your saying we can’t customize the code in the template file? maybe I should find another theme ??

    Thread Starter wrightj999

    (@wrightj999)

I’ve also just had a slight revelation. the https://www.cwws.org website is a customized version of theme 2011 1.3. It must be something hard coded into the theme, that conveniently allows you to set a static page as the home page (via settings>reading), and when you do this in the 2011 theme it doesn’t generate a link in the navbar, but just keeps the ‘home’ link active.

So there is something different going on with the 2011 theme as compared to the nantucket website, where I am going to have to figure out how to make it act like the 2011 theme.

Any takers on giving advice to this?

Okay, so I figured out what I really want to do (and it’s actually a little different than I first suggested). I don’t think it involves going to the appearance>menu like you suggest, as I somehow have managed to do this with one site of mine, but now I’m not recalling how I pulled it off.

I need to keep the home link, but have a static page be what the website opens up to upon opening the site. So I obviously have this set in the settings>reading config to go to the ‘About Us’ page. I want there to be no ‘About Us’ link in the navigation bar, but instead have the home link point to that page.

I have done this with my site https://www.cwws.org. Where I have a page called “professional multimedia services”, but the link says home, and there is no link in the navigation bar that says “professional media services”.

When I go to the appearance>menu like you suggest, it only asks me to add a new menu, and all the other options are ghosted.

so I’ve figured out how to make all these changes on my own with no help from the community here. I still have one dillema. maybe someone could advise? use https://www.millionshares.com for reference.

I would like to stretch the main content area and the header and footer to be a bit wider to fill the gap on the left and right. these areas are using tiles images. Do I need to modify/resize the actual images and reload them into the theme directory? and then maybe fudge a little css code to make them line up again? advice would be much appreciated.

update: I have figured out how to move the sidebar that shifted over to the left. I just had to change it’s css to float right. Now i just need to get the main content area to expand over and fill the gap. working on this, any insight would be nice ??

    (@wrightj999)

so i went ahead and answered my question about removal of the extra sidebar. Upon removing ‘extraneous’ sidebar (down to one sidebar) I found that the main content areas of the left did not expand to fill the space, but the remaining sidebar shifted to the left, leaving a gap to the right side of the page. So i’m figuring that maybe I can resize those areas through updating the associated css. I’m using firebug to try to pinpoint the code that needs to be changed but having trouble with that. can anyone offer me advice as to how to do this? maybe take a look at https://www.millionshares.com and see what you can figure out?

I think as far as layout goes, I’ve decided that it would be acceptable to remove one of what appears to be two sidebars that appear on every page, so that the main content area expands across the page in place of it. Strangely enough, when I went to the ‘widgets’ option to adjust what is on the sidebar, there is only one sidebar that has anything in it. I can’t seem to figure out where to remove the sidebar that is located in the middle and contains menu elements/widgets such as: tags, pages, meta and blog roll. hmm, very curious i can’t find where to get rid of these. do I need to make an adjustment to the sidebar.php?

No, it has not been solved. While it’s not the biggest deal, and I can live with things as they are, for my own knowledge I’d still really like to know how to get what is discussed above to work. If you could shed some light on the subject, it would be much appreciated. Love the theme, you designed.. just ignore the above comment as I was maybe a tad frustrated, you did a wonderful job on the theme, lol ??
