There is no definite answer to your question. 0.9.2.5 seems to work very well for a lot of users, 0.9.2.8 has some issues with some setups. It is very difficult to predict which version works best for you, as there are so many different configurations in the wild.
After all, in my opinion you will have to try out. I am personally still using 0.9.2.5 in a modified version from forum user wmiles. I am on shared hosting and it works extremely reliable, and I do have reasons to believe it might also be a good choice for other people here, but obviously, you will have to try out yourself to know for certain.

Hi @leggo-my-eggo, when I wrote my posting above I already had in mind that my suggestion doesn’t necessarily tackle your challenge directly. But I have it in my guts this might work nevertheless.
You could give it a try and see wether Cloudfront shows a different behavior when skipping the misleading S3 bucket. It won’t take long to implement and you can always switch back with a few mouseclicks.

In reply to: [W3 Total Cache] Site appears to lose css when W3TC is activatedAre you using minify in automatic mode?
Change it to manual, use the help wizard, include .css and .js files step by step and try which inclusion causes the problem. After you found the culprit, leave the .js and .css file out for this function/plugin out. There seems to be a widespread misunderstanding out there:
In order to use w3 total cache with Amazon Cloudfront, it is not necessary to create a S3 bucket beforehand. This I know for sure, because I use cloudfront successfully without S3. Please try the following:
1. Create a new cloudfront distribution. As a source, do not use a S3 bucket, but enter the necessary data from your hosting provider/website
2. Select Cloudfront in the CDN tab
3. use the new distributionwhat did Frederick Townes want to talk to you offline about?
@new-wp-guy
If we had a private conversation via Skype, would you like me to make the details public afterwards? ??
But what to give you an idea, we talked about some technical implications of the project and that wmiles version is probably not a “fork”.Interesting that the new “update” has an offer for professional service?
I have voiced a few thoughts about the paid service Frederick offers here.
Glad to hear it helped. I am still very happy with that version, too.

In reply to: [W3 Total Cache] Bigger & SlowerNot needing S3 with Cloudfront doesn’t sound right to me
I can fully confirm I use cloudfront successfully without S3. It pulls the files directly from wordpress and stores them in the cloud, in my experience there is no need to use a S3 bucket at all.
Looking at your source, you are using disk “enhanced” for page cache. Change that to Disk “basic”. Also disable database and object cache.
I agree here.
Why the behaviour of your setup should change all over sudden is yet unclear to me. is there anything you did or changed?
BTW, just checked your front page via browser and pingdom tools. Everything looks like normal to me.

In reply to: [W3 Total Cache] Bigger & SlowerLooking at pingdom tools, on your staring page there are still some issues:
wp-content/upload/*
is still not being picked up by cloudfront-
there are still some Amazon S3 – instances left:

this .js file is not in your minify list yet and takes a long time to load
https://www.anthonypeyper.com/?staticfile=masthead.js&cb=1360502050841
All summed up, these issues take valuable load time. From what I can tell from pingdom tools, You are loosing around 50% load time (first call from Amsterdam server: 3,xx seconds at the moment).

In reply to: [W3 Total Cache] Bigger & SlowerTo me this seems like yet another excuse to force the service to be paid!
sLa NGjl’s, I personally wouldn’t go that far.
Yes, I do believe that there is a business model behind Frederick Townes developing this plugin. His company w3 edge seems to fund itself offering services related to the plugins functionality to larger companies. And my guess is that this plugin helps demonstrating his competence to existing and potential customers. But no, I don’t think the flaws in with the latest updates were introduced on purpose. I think Frederick like any software-developer with a business-model behind a “free” version of his software would be ill-advised to put at risk what is most important for the brand of any software: Productivity, reliability and trust.
That being said, I have one question and one request: :
- Question: Frederick stated in another post that the issues many users report in the forums lately have not appeared within the circle of his paying customers. My conclusion from this statement is that his paying customers work with different setups than a significant part of users in this forum. If this is true, wouldn’t it be an obvious idea to enlarge the beta-testing user base and make sure a larger variety of setups are being tested and considered in future beta-testing cycles?
-
Request: What I really like (and can’t live without) about wmiles tweaked version of w3c total cache is the following functionality:
- Prime caching all pages and posts when server load is low (e.g. around midnight or 2am in the morning)
- Re-priming single pages or posts whenever they are changed or new ones are created
- make the prime cache process in the night independent from cron-calls to make sure all pages and posts have always been fully cached at all times 24/7.
Frederick mentioned elsewhere this would not work in all setups and environments. Would it be at least possible to make this functionality an option to opt in or out?
Why I am so passionate about this is because I noticed that priming allposts and pages has made my website so much faster that I am beating most of my competition in my niche when it comes to speed. And this is all what w3c total cache should be (and is, in my opinion) about.Hi @frederick Townes,
I just sent you a message via contact form.

In reply to: [W3 Total Cache] Faster than WP Super CacheFor me, wmiles forked version 0.9.2.5 still is the most
- feature rich
- bug-free
- enhanced
best working version so far. Check his release notes here.
I am using it on shared hosting – it works brilliantly. Check this, this and this thread to understand why.
With cloudfront CDN, I have managed to get my pageload speed down to less than 1,0 seconds.
This is amongst other things due to the fact that wmiles has fixed cache preload function (and some other features) which do not work or did not exist at all in Frederick Townes 0.9.2.5 release.
I can really recommend the 0.9.2.5 fork by wmiles!

There even is a better version out there.
You will want to install the 0.9.2.5 fork from wmiles.
Check this, this and this thread to understand why.
From my experience, it is the best version released so far, although it is not from the original author. It contains fixes and enhancements that make it a stable and kind of benchmark release. Go check it out. You will be pleased, it is better than the original version released by Frederick Townes.

No. I really don’t think so.

@frederick Townes:
Maybe the 0.9.2.7 resolved the inital issue in this thread, but from what I can see in this forum, it causes a lot of other issues.
