I figured it out and as I thought, it wasn’t anything to do with your plugin, I just thought it was odd that the plugin wasn’t capturing it.

This site has custom posts types on it and the permalink structure was set to just postname and not category/postname so updating that stopped it doing a partial match on the permalink and hijacking it! So it was never triggering a 404 even though technically the permlink didn’t exist – WP was being a smartass and doing a partial match.

No, it’s not a one-off for me. If you run your own site and you’re on it every day, you’re never going to have this problem, but I’m an SEO and I work on multiple client sites and I usually log into a site every couple of weeks to manage the 404s, sometimes once a month – it really depends on what budget my client has.

On most of my sites, there are always lots of random hacking attempts, so 404s exist for things like https://www.domain.com/ghtsh & https://www.domain.com/hkwhy etc. hundreds of them, so stuff will easily get lost in the mix.

Another thing is that as I install it now on all my new clients sites, I have the same problem again with every new install, so it’s going to start afresh each time I win a new contract.

Another suggestion I spotted on another 404 tool is that it also emails you when a new 404 is detected (you can set the number of 404s to exist before an email is sent) which is a nice feature.

Thanks for confirming aaron – very happy to use yours as it seems you at least update it – 6 months without an update is a LONG time. I was just confused as I thought “hold on, this is a same plugin with a different author and name” ??

I’m having exactly the same problem – tags, categories etc. doesn’t work – only pages.

I just spotted this bug on ALL of our sites on different hosts – GoDaddy, 1&1, Heart, 123 Reg. So it isn’t host specific.

I found it by accidentally mistyping the URL for wp-admin – so I typed “wep-admin” and I get the 404 page instead of the coming soon page.

With further testing, ANYTHING with admin in the url seems to do the same:

mysite.com/typo-admin
mysite.com/AGGHHH-adminSGSG

All reveal the 404 which in our case is branded, shows menus, footer, site design etc. so not great ??

1 month and counting – is this plugin supported anymore?

Same problem for me – any idea when this will be fixed?
