In reply to: [Yoast SEO] All widgets content disappearedSorry, I didn’t get an email notification. Manually re-installed wordpress-seo. Fingers crossed.

In reply to: widget_custom_html missing from page and Control panelHi. I’ve already tried that although I didn’t activate twenty-ninteen. I viewed my site through the “live preview” and the content was still missing. A full list of everything I’ve tried is on my first post. That’s why the fault is so puzzling.
Since my last post I’ve also reinstalled Genesis. And I’ve re-installed version 5.1.1–en_GB of WordPress.
I have noticed that one of my plugins called simple sidebars is apparently abandoned and “not tested on my version of WordPress. This is weird because I thought it was one of the Genesis plugins. Anyway I’ve deactivated and deleted it just in case.
However, the content was still not being displayed. I hadn’t changed anything prior to this issue other than the constant updates that need doing. It seemed to me to happen after a WordPress update but not sure.
The only thing I can think of at the moment is possibly the Genesis simple sidebars plugin was at fault although many of the sidebars that had the custom HTML widget disappear from were default sidebars from my theme and nothing to do with Simple sidebars.
I’ve repopulated my HTML content now and all is well. I can only hope they don’t disappear again next week.

In reply to: widget_custom_html missing from page and Control panelHello. Thanks for a prompt reply.
I’m not sure I follow you though? I’ve already disabled every single plugin and the custom HTML widgets remained missing. Also I’ve already installed an unedited fresh version of my child theme and that didn’t work either. I’ve also tried a preview of the default WordPress tewnty-nineteen theme and it was still all missing. The whole thing makes no sense ??

In reply to: Strange characters appearing but only after editingThis is why I hate “free” software. No support ??
Additional information: if I changed to visual editor, and delete the £ sign and then retype it then it doesn’t make any difference. I would expect that if I am in the visual editor and I type £ then the Gothenburg editor would use the correct HTML. But when I do this and update the page the £ still displays as a ? inside a black diamond.
What I am most puzzled about is that these £’s are displaying perfectly okay, and have done for years. It is only if I go to edit mode on one of these pages, then instantly this £ sign gets corrupted and can’t be changed back even with the proper alt code

.My WordPress site has been up for over 12 years so I can’t see how it could be a setup issue?

In reply to: Strange characters appearing but only after editingIt’s getting worse. In edit mode it’s adding an ? character before every £ so it looks like this – ?£39.64 which then displays as ?£39.64 with the question mark being inside a black diamond.
To sum up, there’s nothing wrong with my posts and pages. But if I go to edit any page then these faults are being inserted into the code by the WordPress editor.
There shouldn’t be anything wrong with the character set in the database or server, the site has been up since 2007. These erroneous characters are being inserted by WordPress when switching to edit mode. A bug in latest update?
Also, plenty of £ are featured in my sidebar and after post markup but they display perfectly OK. It’s only when going into edit mode that the problem happens.

In reply to: [Simple Page Sidebars] All simple sidebar content goneAhh sorry. Yes I might be in the wrong place. It’s simple sidebars, part of Genesis. Feel free to delete this.

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] All widgets content disappearedI should add that I did a WordPress update at the same time. However, the error does appear to point to the SEO folder.
Many thanks wfdave. I was intrigued that you had no problem so I tried again. It worked fine this time. I don’t know if by any chance Wordfence tweaked something, but probably not as they never responded.
Last time I unzipped the xml file to my desktop. This time I unziped the whole plugin’s folder. I don’t know if that could make any difference though. The only things in the folder are the xml file, an install.txt file containing one line – “Go to ACP -> System -> Plugins and upload the XML.” and a jpeg screenshot.
Hello Support? Can you please reply to my question. Your software appears to be stopping me from installing a plugin on my site with no explanation as to why.

In reply to: [FV Gravatar Cache] Do you still need this if you use a cache plugin?Presumably this plugin isn’t being well supported. I’ll give it a miss thanks.

In reply to: Save place in markup when previewing changesThe new Gutenberg editor has the feature I wanted ??

In reply to: Save place in markup when previewing changesMany thanks. I’m presuming that floats the publish button. When I’m ready to publish I don’t mind going to the top of the page because I have finished editing. The 2nd button that I would find extremely useful to have floating is the save draft button.
I’ve just tried to work it out myself, but struggling. I like the 2nd button, especially the different CSS styling. But could you just finally tell me what to amend so that I have the save draft button floating instead please? I probably preview and save draft hundreds of times whilst composing a long article, so these are the ones that will revolutionise my working environment.
Once again many thanks for your extremely useful help.
Andy

In reply to: Save place in markup when previewing changesMany thanks bcworkz. That is literally the most useful and important modification I’ve ever found. It will massively improve my workflow from now on. I genuinely cannot understand why it is not designed like that. I can’t imagine I am unique in being constantly frustrated by having to re-find my place after previewing changes.
Admittedly I get a bit obsessive about previewing changes. I like to preview changes after virtually every change. So I’m probably a bit excessive but most people would find something like this useful. I’m extremely grateful.
I’m now wondering whether it would be possible to have the save button do the same? I have disabled autosave. I like to save manually regularly, but only after previewing the changes to ensure I’m happy. So if the save draft button was to also follow my scrolling it would be a perfect fix.

In reply to: Save place in markup when previewing changesMany thanks. That sounds like a great workaround. I was going to add that if only the preview button could be accessed without having to scroll back up to the top of the page it would be a big help.
I’m just not sure exactly how to get it to work. I just clumsily pasted your code into my child themes functions PHP file which brought the site down. Then I realised it is CSS and should be in a stylesheet. Doh! Then I pasted the entire code from the linked site into functions PHP file and that also brought the site down.
I would very much appreciate a more specific instruction. Presumably I paste the CSS code into my child themes stylesheet? But what exactly would I need to put into the child themes functions PHP file?
Many thanks
Andy
