Hi Spencer,

It would awesome if you could make a quick screencast of the steps you took to see the facebook reviews sections of our plugin.

I thought this was clearly indicated above but let me try again.
1. Install plugin
2. Click Feed Them
3. Select “Facebook Feed” in 1st drop down.
4. Select “Facebook Page Page Reviews in 2nd drop down (bottom on the list)
That is all that is needed to reproduce.

For the Facebook Page, I followed your instructions to create a shortcode and dropped the code on a page. This is when I get the original message I opened the ticket on: “You must have FTS Facebook Reviews extension active to see this feed.”

This would be your step 3 “Now publish your Page or Post and view it. It should look something like the example below.”

Then I tried something different:
1. Select Feed Them
2. Select Facebook Options

This did take me to a different screen with options for a facebook access token and also a facebook id. Saving this page does not clear the facebook ID but does not resolve the error.

At the top of the screen is the “login and get my access token button” but I am certainly not going to give you permissions to my facebook page to check out a plugin.

In fact, that is a show stopper. The fact that your plugin is demanding access to my friend list, etc in order to evaluate a plugin has raised trust issues. In all fairness, I can not recommend your plugin based on this alone. It would not change even if I did manage to get it working.

I have already found several facebook plugins that will meet the needs of my customers, this is simply some courtesy feedback for your efforts.

IMHO you need to radically simplify your plugin configuration. A Save all changes button that clears the configuration baffles me.

As for demanding access to my friend list, one can only speculate on your intentions.

I’m not sure how you were able to see those options without that extension installed.

The steps are easy to reproduce:

Settings
Facebook Feed
Feed Type = Facebook Page Reviews

After you hit save, none of the settings save.

NOTE: I did end up getting a facebook ID after concluding that the majority of the facebook plugins will not work without an ID (not a developer issue, but a facebook requirement). HOWEVER, when I follow the above steps and select Feed Type = Facebook Page, enter my ID (or yours) and hit save, once again, none of the settings save.

I was able to get several other products working, including page reviews so I’m pretty sure it’s not an issue with my ID.

You may want to review the installation procedure/instructions as the plugin really, really looks broken.

With 40K+ installs and a near 5-star rating I am sure that is not the case, however, it shouldn’t be hard to understand how someone could interpret it this way.

When a save doesn’t save and doesn’t generate warning/errors, the user is not left with much to go on, most people will assume it’s not working and will move on as I did.

Thanks for your answer, it was most helpful. Your explanation led me to the answer.

FYI: It’s not that I want to load the plugin. Any wordpress admin on the VPS could load the plugin and I can’t prevent that.

The problem was the php setting open_basedir was set to none. Changing that to {WEBSPACEROOT}{/}{:}{TMP}{/} now restricts the read-only view to local webserver files.

This was the default setting but the wordpress backup plugin Duplicator warned against this value and recommended ‘none’. php.net suggests that it might be a needed setting for some mysql functions. I guess I can test it and see if anything breaks.

I have a couple of questions regarding the auto-update process (WordPress 4.1):

I understand the auto-update can be disabled with:
‘define( ‘AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED’, true );’

Is there a way to be notified by email when a new update is available? This would allow for the option of backing up the database and files prior to the update. (possibly even by causing a failure, i.e. changing permissions on one or more files to temporarily break/interrupt the auto-update process)

If auto-updates are used how is the following update recommendation maintained?
