I have fixed the problem.

I deleted the file system in the ftp so it was just wp-content/uploads and then in the settings in wordpress Settings/Media unticked the ‘organise my uploads ….’

and it now works

apparently by default the anti-hotlinking is disabled. But the .htaccess file cannot be found in the wordpress folder

Yeah it is but it has a few folders before you get to the images wp-content/uploads/2013/11/then the images
