Thanks, David, for your speedy, helpful response to my query. I did check the FAQ before posting, but I didn’t find the right question.
In my case, this portion of the FAQ answered my question: “it keeps them on your webserver (in the wp-content/updraft folder.”
As the FAQ warns, this is not a safe location for the only backup. So I just configured saving the backup files via FTP to another server.
