We confirmed a new subscriber shortly before this happened, via the Email Subscribers & Newsletters Starter 4.7.4 plugin. Maybe that person was able to send malware that way?

Issue resolved. Found an antiquated Multicon plugin that remained activated and seemed to be the culprit. Working fine now.

Thanks Jess. Yesterday we switched to the honeypot option and I’m thinking we’ll run that unless it becomes an issue, in which case we’ll switch to no-conflict mode on reCAPTCHA. Your helpful reply is most appreciated.

Update, Email Subscribers & Newsletters plugin is not running captcha.

@jquigam, I’m facing the issue with Invisible reCAPTCHA where it says “Form has not been submitted, please see the errors below”… “reCAPTCHA is required.” In an earlier reply you suggested switching to WordPress ZeroSpam however that plugin’s page says “This plugin hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.”

In reviewing the site’s other plugins, the only one that apparently might be simultaneously running reCAPTCHA is Email Subscribers & Newsletters, but I’m not finding any mention of it in the documentation. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
