Well, generally, getting photo blogging themes are rare in free area. There are good ones, But as you are new user and if you want more features, i suggest you go for premium ones.

There are lots of free photo blogging themes too. Recently i find one culture that the themes are encrypted in footer or functions.php or in any file. Personally i think they are risky to use. So avoid them.

I think you are possibly new to wordpress. You dont need to edit any code. Just add widgets. They should remove existing ones automatically in frontend.

I am not sure on Sandbox. I think it does not use the recent menu concept added from admin.

Yes, Twentyten is also a great theme. I should consider it too.

Sandbox is a great theme. But I think i cannot use it as it is, because, technically it is heavy.

Moreover, Only child themes look better with it.

Also, do you think they have updated it for recent framework?

hmm, good question. I think i have not seen such themes so far. However, I have see themes with similar functionalities of a plugin , but added in functions.php

So, to my knowledge, This kind of possibility is not added yet.
