I found the problem. I had two other optimization plugins activated. I deactivated those and it works fine. (Not to self – uninstall plugins that replicate capabilities of other plugins.)

I don’t have that option – Remove Whitespace.

Even with all the boxes unchecked, as soon as I enable HTML minify, the screen goes blank. (Fortunately I still have the admin session going, so I can change the setting and get the blog back.)

I’m seeing this error in the apache error logs:

PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class Minify_HTML in /usr/home/schmehl/Sites/blog.vvfh.org/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/Minify/Minify/HTML.php on line 19, referer: https://blog.vvfh.org/

Since we bought the pro version we have continued to have problems, and the developer is not very responsive at all. I have sent him emails that he never responds to and tried to use his chat and forum with little results. I understand he is in Bulgaria and there’s quite a time difference between us, but that doesn’t excuse a more than 24 hour response to an email.

The preview shows up in a separate window in the browser. You can use details to provide a brief description of the book as well.

I just haven’t found any other plugin that comes close to doing what we want, so we’ve hired a developer to look at the code and fix the problems.

1) The thanks page, when it works, displays variable names instead of their values – for example %%first_name%% instead of John Doe. The only variable that is displayed is the download link.
2) The software tries to get verification of the transaction and then fails, resets, and tries again every 5 seconds, generation 10’s of thousands of hits on the website before it finally gives up and dies.
3) You can’t offer one book in multiple formats (e.g. pdf and mobi). You have to create two books to sell both versions.)
4) The display forces the user to scroll when you have more than two books for sale.

Hopefully we can resolve these issues. If we do, we’ll send the diffs the developer, and maybe he will incorporate them.

Never mind. I figured it out. I had to uninstall the free version and install the paid version.

Seems like the author could just add an upgrade pro setting, but what do I know?

After further testing, this is untrue. define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘500M’); overrides the default constant of 32M (multisite) or 64M (single site). You also have to override the define( ‘WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’ ); by adding a second define to the wp-config.php file of define( ‘WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘500M’ );

The solution was to add a define to the wp-config.php file:
define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘500M’);

That overrides the constant set in wp-includes/default-constants.php:

define( ‘WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’ );
}

Which is what causes the error message:
PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted

Setting a memory limit in php.ini doesn’t do a thing if the file sizes are larger than 256MB (which one of mine was.)

It seems like the import tool should have the capability to reject a single file and move on to the next one, but instead it bails on the error. It’s bad programming, but it’s not my problem now.

Well, that didn’t work. I increased the upload_max_filesize to 2G, and it still gave me the same error. After reading this article I installed WP Cleanup and ran it. Now I’m testing again.
