Like @brand-rocket, when I added a nickname, the visual editor reappeared.

I was having the same problem.
Make sure you have these tags in your theme:
Just before the </head> tag:
<?php wp_head(); ?>

and just before the </body> tag:
<?php wp_foot(); ?>

That fixed mine right up.
