Brilliant, thank you. That was slightly nervewracking, but seems to have worked okay. Curiously lost a couple of of small elements (a site logo, a favicon end so on) but that’s probably because wordpress had stored them somewhere else and they therefore didn’t get transferred across. Easy enough to reupload though, so no harm done.

Jeremy, that is brilliant, and has done just what I asked. You’ve been a great help.

I wonder if I could ask just one more thing. though. (Sorry!) Your plug-in has disabled the comments box itself, but I still have a file name and a “view full size” box showing under each photo.

Ideally I’d like to get rid of those as well so the only visible elements are the photograph and the left/right arrows.

I’m rather new to all this lark, have just tried this with no success. I’ve removed the code again for now. Is there anywhere specific in the functions.php file I should be placing this?

(Sorry, I have a very basic HTML knowledge that’s about 15 years out of date and have never previously got involved with coding of any sort since then.)

Aha. Yes, it’s jetpack – the gallery option there is called “carousel”. Have managed to disable metadata, will carry on fiddling to rid myself of the comment box. (Disabling comments globally as you suggested doens’t seem to have worked.)

The only plug-in I have is Jetpack.

Actually, can I continue this discussion…

I’ve just changed my theme, and am now using WordPress’s own “2012” theme. Same thing happening.

Oh, darn. I’m using a free template with very limited support. Thought these things were wordpress code rather than the template developer’s.

No plug-in, just using the built in ‘create gallery’ option when adding a photo to a page.
