Well after a deal of searching and googling a solution provided itself in the form of adding:

remove_filter (‘single_post_title’, ‘wptexturize’);
remove_filter (‘bloginfo’, ‘wptexturize’);
remove_filter (‘wp_title’, ‘wptexturize’);
remove_filter (‘the_title’, ‘wptexturize’);

To the functions.php file of the theme. Just before the last ?>

I have the same problem but it only occurs when using a particular theme (Jenny). It doesn’t happen with other themes I’ve tried. Entering alt+ 0146 doesn’t help either though I’ve read others have had success with a similar problem.

I found an errant symlink of mine from an install earlier on that messed up. All working now. As for a first release, it’s very impressive. Thank you.

They were the first things I’d checked. Thinking I may have a dupe options-general.php somewhere. As for the necessity for my surprise well one just gets used to plugins working out of the box with the minimal amount of configuration.

Thanks Jim, but wp-config.php doesn’t seem to have anywhere to define the path.

I knew the theme wasn’t the problem as it’s PrimePress 1.2.2 by Ravi Varma https://www.techtrot.com/ and he’s pretty on the ball about stuff, so I took out the plugins and the offending article was ‘contentboxes 1.0.2’ by Ralf Hortt https://www.horttcore.de/.

Everything’s tikity boo now.

Rename index.html to 2index.html and see what happens. That way index.php will take over which should be your wordpress installation.

That’s probably the problem then. Mike probably has a lot more experience with it than me but I’m figuring you haven’t told ‘wordpress’ where it’s directory is.

Did you install wordpress into https://j-alexandria.com/wordpress or another directory. I took a look and there doesn’t seem to be anything there.

You may need to describe your hosting setup and how you’re ‘installing’ wordpress.

Any pointers from anybody to what I should be looking at would be gratefully appreciated.
