I forgot to mention that I’m using the Cillibox theme (https://themeforest.net/item/chillibox-premium-wordpress-theme/509578)

Can I use the method you described above with this theme?

The site only exist on my computer at the moment so can not link to it.

I want everything outside of the main body and sidebar to be gray.

Managed to fix it by using the Widget Logic plug-in and for Conditional Tags and add the widgets in functons.php and sidebar.php
