truns out I actually had the damn word “rin” in my wp-config.php
removing it fixed all issues
it’s a brand new, clean installation of wordpress. latest version from www.remarpro.com
no plugins, no custom themes.
same happens with twenty 14, 15 and 16

Just found your post. SkyDrive has some serious levels of authentication but it could be done perhaps if you set the repository to public.
This plugin does something very similar but with private repositories, which will ask for authentication and them come back to WordPress.
