    Hi @aert,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, I’m using Analytics with Monsterinsights. I’ve run the Monsterinsights Wizard and everything seems OK there. The only little puzzle is that it’s telling me to clear a cache, but I can’t see what is caching. (I don’t have a cache plugin.) Possibly my web hotel has something I’m not aware of. I’ll drop them a line.

I’ve now disabled Complianz. I suppose it’ll take a day or two to see if that makes any difference.

But what I suspect is causing the problem are the changes I made to my Google account, recommended by your Wizard. Things like anonymizing IP strings (?) There were three or four actions I had to take. I would be happy to reverse these, even if it meant I’d have to have a cookie banner, to get back to seeing visitors.

    Thanks again,

    John

    Hi @prashantvatsh

I installed the Health Check troubleshooter. (Excellent plug-in!) But it didn’t help. With the site using Twenty-Twenty as a theme and all the plug-ins disabled, I had exactly the same problem. Except that now I lose the possibility to return to visual editing even in images not inside the column block.

I took a screenshot/video of the issue and uploaded it to my YouTube acc. It’s private, but you can view it by following this link. 3mins 40, but you don’t need to view it all to see the problem.

    Hi @prashantvatsh

    Thanks for this suggestion.

I’ll find time to try it out during the coming week and report back.

    Cheers,

    Thanks for your reply @prashantvatsh

What I understand from that you write is that there is somewhere else to click in the HTML code for the picture in order to get the three dots with the edit visually option. But where?

Clicking anywhere in the HTML text of the image, code or caption gives me nothing.
Clicking on the gutter between the columns gives me the three dot tab to edit the block of the double column. (Several options but no option to switch back to editing visually.)
Clicking on the fine line of the image block edging the gutter gives me the same as clicking on the gutter.
Clicking on the thicker line on the outer edge of the column gives me nothing.
Clicking on the fine line at the top or bottom of the image block gives me the three dot tab which only has the Hide Block Settings option.

    I have tried multiple times.

I’ve also tried switching to Code Editor (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+M) and back, but that doesn’t help. When I switch back, the block is still stuck in HTML mode.

    Four other observations:

The problem is only in the back end – it makes no difference to how the image is presented at the front end. Thank goodness.
I can work around by closing the post without saving it. Re-opening it again has everything switched back to visual editing again.
I can also save the page and view it before re-opening it to edit. Again, that resets everything to the Visual editor
It doesn’t seem to be a problem that affects all my images in columns. Just some.

So it doesn’t reduce me to screaming frustration – it’s just very annoying.

I wonder if this is what qualifies as a bug?

Very many thanks for the feedback. I’ll update when the new version comes out and try it out again.

I’ll mark this thread resolved now.

I do see potential in the Gutenberg blocks, and how they might replace (some) shortcodes eventually. But as a non-coder, I’m disappointed it’s still so difficult to work with. I put off looking at it for six months or so after the launch hoping most of the teething problems would be solved by now. Maybe I should try it again next year.

Another thought on the forum interface. How about putting the “+ Create Topic” button in a nice bright contrasting colour. Fluorescent orange or acid green perhaps. Just so it stands out!

    Thanks for your reply @bcworkz

Now I’m looking at the possibility of using the Short Code Ultimate plug-in as a work around. Based on what I made in the Classic Editor, I’ve created a sort of HTML template that I can paste into the short code and then fill with the relevant text, images and links. It’s fiddly, but at least I can see and understand what I’m doing.

CSS I’m afraid is a foreign language to me. The effort and above all the time I’d need to learn how to to do this small thing from the bottom of the pit of my ignorance doesn’t seem to me to be justified. Coding is not what I have a WP blog for and I really DON’T think Code is Poetry!

Maybe I’ll give up on Gutenberg and go back to the Classic Editor for now. I’ve just wasted the better part of a weekend on something I thought would take a couple of hours. All a bit depressing really.

As far as finding the Create Topic form goes, I appreciate your (WP.org’s) dilemma. That you want to get people to create topics in the right forum and also to discourage too many new topics. I don’t ask that many questions nowadays (perhaps that’ll change if I’m going to get a grip on Gutenberg) so I’d forgotten how to start a topic.

My situation was that I’d been searching around and around for what felt like hours looking for help on my issue when I realised I’d have to start a topic. At that point I just couldn’t find where to start. NOW I can see that “+ Create Topic” button, but THEN I was blind to it. ??

Admittedly Googling “how to start a topic” was a bit desperate.

Perhaps if there were a duplicate of the “+ Create Topic” button in the side column between “Log out” and “Recent posts” or between “Subscribe” and “Views”?

    Thanks again for your response.

My question isn’t really resolved, so I’ll leave this open for another 48 hours just in case anyone else has something to add.

    Hi @webtoffee,

Thanks for your reply and also for the contact from your suppport desk. They offered to help if gave them access to my admin account, which I would do if not for the admin account being on a virtual server on my private computer at home. I’m not going to open that.

However, I’m prepared to accept the problem is with my database rather than with your software.

Although the result I’m getting is not perfect, it’s so much better than nothing at all. All the comments are preserved on my database, just not threaded. With a little time and effort I can repair the most important breaks and I’ll live with the rest.

Thanks for your help. I’ve removed “import unreliable” from the tags and marked this as resolved.

    PS:
    As regards…

Also, please try clearing the transients from Woocommerce>Status>Tools>Clear transients

I don’t have WooCommerce installed. I am using your plugin to export and import WordPress Comments only.

OK, I’m still facing the same problems so, as you asked, I’ve uploaded the latest CSV file to your pro-support page.

    My ticket number is 3575.

I look forward to hearing back from.

    Hi @webtoffee

I have a final block of comments to transfer, so I’ll try to follow your suggestions and see if I can overcome the problem. (Or duplicate it.)

Almost all my plugins are inactive, but I hadn’t thought to experiment with a different theme. My active theme is a child of Generate Press. If I switch to one of the recent WordPress themes – say TwentyEighteen – do you think that is a stable alternative?

And just to make sure I’ve understood what I’m tryng to do correctly, please confirm that the entries in the columns comment_parent and comment_alter_id are the two that need to match for the comments to thread properly.

    Thanks,

    John

    Ah, thank you!

I thought I’d updated the plugin but clearly not.

    My bad.

    Ooops! Sorry I never replied.

Yes. It must be something like that. I’ve fiddled around, but I don’t really know what I’m doing. The problem continues, but I’ll live with it.
