Hi folks, not sure if anyone needs more help but this link: https://jetpack.me/2012/07/13/jetpack-1-5-with-carousel/ provided some clues. The thing that did it for me was “jquery”. The carousel uses the latest version of jquery and my theme used an older version (1.6.1), which is not compatible.
