Thank you, I hadn’t even thought about auto-complete. I will definitely try it this way.
The thing is, I was actually asking about how to actually build the search form with its two parts, for example a category dropdown and an autocomplete search form. I can’t get it to work with any of the free plugins I tried.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thank you all for the answers. I think I am going to go with a theme from the directory and build it up. There’s just one quick follow-up:

When you hit a wall with that, make a child theme.

Does this mean that by using a child theme I can bypass theme restrictions such as limited color options, limited header customization, etc.?
