Not sure that this will help you, but it helped me so here it is! When I was having this issue I reset the Maximum script execution time to 25 seconds, and that cleared things up.

According to the text at the bottom of that page:

Make sure you clear all your caching and check your .htaccess file for anything weird, too ??

If you found and removed ‘stuff’ with WordFence, you might be in the clear at this point. Perhaps try and load what you have on to a local dev machine and take a closer look at it there to see if the malicious code has been removed in the process. It’s most likely injected into your header or footer.

Hopefully you have a backup of the DB so you can start with a fresh install. Use strong passwords and secure FTP next time around. Consider installing the WordFence plugin to help prevent these issues in the future.

FYI WFMattR, when I attempted to put the Firewall into learning mode as a word around, it would just revert back to being fully enabled. Same when trying to switch it to disabled.

It reallllly wants to make sure you’re using the firewall =D

Ended up having to disable the plugin – fortunately this is just a dev instance and I haven’t updated any other sites.

Has been reported already and they’re working on a fix.

The only thing that fixed it for me in the interim was to disable the plugin altogether because it wouldn’t allow me to disable just the firewall – kept auto-turning it back on.

To update this for others – this is using the AVADA theme version 3.9.3 – and the theme was the culprit in this case.

Their support team has issued a patch today (4.13.2016) to remedy this situation. The issue is caused by some JavaScript changes made in WordPress 4.5 and requires patching in order to resolve.

I’ve tested it and am pleased to announce that the issue is resolved when using Avada 3.9.3.
