I used a plug in called Full Background Image Manager WordPress Plugin

This was very easy to use as i was given the option to change the background image on a page from the page editor.

this also prevented there being a large amount of white space either side of the main body.

I know this is the wrong thread to be recommending plugins but this is a very useful plug in which has enhanced this theme further for myself.

found a way to sort it without using metaslider, took the compromise over struggling with tiny aspect of the site

Probably down to the positioning that you had placed the metaslider in the code.

has this been updated further, to be compatible with 3.9.2?

yeah all we did was pasted the code into the page. so you should be alright to go ahead for this to make it work.

oh found a way to actually make this work, and now it looks pretty damn awesome, ill post code in below for you. but wish i posted this in earlier for you because i cant remember if it was just as easy as posting it into wordpress.
