Yes, you can install the files in any directory you would like.
NOTE: If you choose to install wordpress to a directory that is not your site’s root directory, but you want your root directory to show your blog, you will need to use a .htaccess file (if you’re on a unix host) to redirect the url to the directory where wordpress is stored. Search the web for help on .htaccess files…or ask here.
