Never mind. I fixed it by checking the ‘TRANSPARENT CONTENT BACKGROUND’ in the APPEARANCE > CUSTOMIZE > GENERAL OPTIONS tab.

Yes the image files are definitely there – I can see them using my FTP utitlity. Strangely though, I can’t load them even when I put the absolute URL into my browser…
