In reply to: PHP Error LogI’m downloading a local copy of my WordPress website and I’ve just noticed my error_log file is 2.1 Gigabytes.
(Once it’s finished downloading) is it ok to delete this file from my live site or do I need to replace it with a blank error_log file.

In reply to: Robots.txt@ Inspired2Write,
I have the same issue as you – I’m using Google XML sitemaps but wish to edit my robot’s text file.
I noticed the XML sitemap plugin has the following checkbox:
Add sitemap URL to the virtual robots.txt file.
The virtual robots.txt generated by WordPress is used. A real robots.txt file must NOT exist in the blog directory!
I think that the line ‘a real robots.txt file must NOT exist…’ only means it must not exist if you want the plugin to add the sitemap url to the virtual robots text, as it has to write to this file.
I also think that if you copy the contents of the virtual file and paste it into a real robots file, you should be able to then upload and edit it as you wish (as long as you untick the checkbox mentioned above).
I don’t think there is any way to use the plugin to actually edit the robots text file.
I have to weigh up 2 choices:
- either have a virtual robots file which I know works, with the correct sitemap url but have the search engines pick up admin pages that I don’t want indexed
- create and upload my own robots file and cross my fingers that it does not clash with the virtual robots file generated by Google XML Sitemap plugin / WordPress.
I don’t actually know if this will work and like you, I’ve been searching for the answer – but I’m going to create my own file this weekend and I’ll post back here if it was successful (or not).
At least your current robots.txt file isn’t blocking anything.
One more thing – you mentioned All in one SEO pack – I use this on all my sites as it’s an extremely useful plugin and does not clash with any other plugin I’ve got installed.

In reply to: WP-dTree 3.5 not displaying page links correctly** UPDATE **
After an email from Ulf (WP-dTree creator) who said it was probably a conflict between plugins, I noticed that the 4 links WP-dTree did pick up were not any 4 at random, they happened to be the 4 that are listed in the header so it is definitely a conflict with the plug in ‘Exclude Pages from Navigation’ by Simon Wheatley (as this excludes all but those 4 same links from the top navigation bar)
Unfortunately I know of no other way to keep the number of header links down to 4 (any more ruins my design)
As this bug is occasional, I’ll live with it but if it ever gets worse I can always put my pages as links in a text or links widget (or just refresh the page order as mentioned above).
I absolutely cannot do without WP-dTree’s handling of my 331 categories.
Someone with more expertise may be able to give a more detailed explanation.
Do not let this occasional conflict put you off either of these two plugins as they are both FANTASTIC and work perfectly together 99.999% of the time.

In reply to: WP-dTree 3.5 not displaying page links correctlyThe solution turned out to be a lot simpler than I thought.
I went into WP-dTree settings, and just changed the page order from ‘sort by menu order’ to ‘sort by title’
I looked at my site and all 12 links had returned. I then changed my page order back to ‘sort by menu order’ and everything is back to normal.
I have no idea why this happened as I made no changes to my site that could conflict with WP-dTree. Maybe the plugin’s creator has the answer.
I’m just grateful it’s working again as my site could not work without this plugin (not without a long list of 331 categories…)

In reply to: Alphabetically list ALL archives and search resultsFor anyone else who has this problem, the only solution was to assign all 221 posts new dates in ascending order.
Works perfectly for anyone using wordpress for a cms website and not a blog.

In reply to: Tag Cloud – Edit TitleCan you please clarify, I’ve found the wp_tag_cloud:
function default_topic_count_text( $count ) { return sprintf( _n('%s topic', '%s topics', $count), number_format_i18n( $count ) ); }
Do I just change the words “topic” and “topics” to whatever I want?
I’m so used to working with xhtml that I expected to find (before reading this post):
`title=”topic”‘
thanks.

In reply to: change ‘the_tags’ on categories results pageI double checked all of the php theme files again and yes – I’d missed one:
archive.php contained another instance of “the_tags” which has now been changed.
Everything is working exactly as I want it to.
Thanks for your advice.

In reply to: can’t get rid ofI deleted the sidebar codes and sure enough, I lost my sidebars…
(what did I think was going to happen?)
…so if you just want rid of the log-in meta data or other default content within the sidebars like I did, edit sidebar1.php and sidebar2.php and remove whatever you need to – this keeps the sidebars active so you can add new widgets.
Great template – really surprised it’s not in the top 10.

In reply to: Post Preview not WorkingI’ve found the answer at https://www.leateds.com/2008/theme-preview-for-wordpress/
I had my blog at “mysite.com/blog” and had a subdomain of “blog.mysite.com” but I’ve changed the wordpress general settings so that the url is the same for both and a 301 redirect should get my subdomain working ok.
preview is now working in all browsers.

In reply to: Post Preview not WorkingSame issue here at blog.worcestershirewebdesign.co.uk – only ever used 2.7.1, all ok until yesterday but now cannot preview anything, keeps saying “Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.”
have tested in firefox, chrome and safari and same problem in all even after clearing cookies/cache.
the problem does not appear in IE7.
any ideas?
