Turns out Mac’s TextEditor was messing with the PHP text and causing it to not be read correctly. Updating via capable fixed this issue.

I should add now I’ve found the problem. A plugin called Recent Category Posts is causing this problem. (https://jameslao.com/2011/03/24/category-posts-widget-3-2/)
When I deactive the plugin posts appear as normally. Now the question for anyone: Any earthly idea why the plugin is causing this? And solutions?
