In my case the wp-cron.php file is not being run automatically.
I am going to set a cron job on the server to run it instead.

Just discovered that mine has stopped working after years without issue.
Disabled and re-enabled the plugin.
Called the /wp-cron.php manually and the expired posts have gone to draft.

Im not sure at this point if it was the disable and re-enable or running the wp-cron that was required.
I will have to wait and see if the next ones run automatically.

It is in the postmeta table with meta_key of _expiration-date

Apologies for this – I found the answer.

Needed to add the require to the init.php not the pagesmenu.php file.

All solved.
