The header image? It sounds like we might not be talking about the same thing.

What I see changing is the headline and text underneath that series of three tabbed links mid-page.

Click on “Mind, Money & Meaning” and the text underneath changes, without reloading anything else on the page.

I replaced my .htaccess file, which cured the problem.

Note – I use Cyberduck as an FTP client, which cannot view invisible files. This fooled me into thinking that there WAS no .htaccess file, and delayed me from checking that as a possible cause.

I’m at dashboard – settings – general, and I don’t see any url’s with trailing slashes.

Yes, that includes a stray </em>

It only occurs on Single Post pages, of course – when comments are visible.

You won’t see an example of the phenomenon of course, since we’re take italics out of the comments so as not to screw up the site.

Thanks for that – but though that plugin *does* do a billion things, it apparently doesn’t do the specific thing I want it to.

Well, it’s been eight months since I asked the question … if what we’re trying to accomplish here is impossible, would someone mind just putting us out of our misery and telling us so?

Turns out the thing to do was simply UPGRADE!

They’d apparently hacked a file in such a way that my inexpert eyes couldn’t tell, but replacing the whole set with shiny new ones took care of it.

I’d thought that I should figure out the problem first, but – wrong.

New industrial-strength password in place, and all seems to be well.

Connections Reloaded, but a very worked-over version.

Success!
