This functionality in the plugin seems broken. It’s so strange that a huge popular plugin like Yoast SEO runs into problems with such a seemingly simple task. Anyway, back to work!
I’m having this same problem, maybe something to do with the alternate currencies? I’m using Costa Rican colon and I get the exact same problem as mtbiker4ever. Were you able to solve it?

Yes, this is buggy. Too bad, it would be really useful to have this.
Right now, it works for me in HTML mode, but if I try to switch back to Visual, it freezes. Won’t show text on the window at all, and then it won’t let me switch back to HTML.
