I actually had this same problem once…
what version of WordPress are you using? I was using 2.2, I’d upgraded from 2.1 and the visual editor made a disappearing act…
I’m no expert, so I just decided I’d have to live without it. I tried re-uploading the original data, all sorts of things…
I fixed the problem by un-checking the ‘enable visual editor’ button in my dashboard. Very odd, but it worked…I don’t know if it would work for you or not, but it’s worth a shot, I guess.

Well, I don’t know if this will work for you or not, but I had the exact same problem…plus, my rich text editor wasn’t working. So..
I actually disabled the rich text editor and now, not only does the rich text editor work, but so do the smilies. So…have you already tried disabling the rich text editor?

So I know how you feel. I’m guessing this happened because of some new plugin I tried installing…but I’m not sure. I de-activated all the new plugins, deleted them all, and it still isn’t working…*sigh*

I just tried it again…and now it’s working. I know I did edit the wp-blog-header.php location before…so I must’ve been doing something else wrong. o.O

I thought I did though, because…
When I didn’t have one though, and uploaded the index.php file to my root directory and was met with a blank white page as my homepage. So…something else must be going wrong. =x

I got it to work! ?? Thank you for your help- I did find out the problem and it WAS in the single.php file. *blush* I probably should’ve checked that out myself initially but I didn’t think of it!
So I’m going to mark this as resolved, now.
