I took the plunge and deactivated all my plugins, but the error was still there, despite clearing all the caches and refreshing everything.
I activated all the plugins one by one, with no issues, except the original error was still there.
I them changed the theme to 2020, and the error went away. I re-activate my theme Overlay, and the error returned.
I, therefore assume the error is related to the theme and have contacted the theme authors.
This topic is now closed, and I have written this to assist any future newbies who may have a similar issue.

The JQuery Migration helper plugin didn’t help.
Unfortunately I am new to this and a little worried about turning all my plugins off to test. As the site is a members only site and is live I am frightened if turning stuff off will kill the site and not be recoverable

Fully understand, so why not have an Update/upgrade issues forum, or at least a mention of update/upgrade issues in the page where you try to choose the most appropriate forum.
Expect people to be psychic is not a good process.

I have exactly the same issue since upgrading the WP 5.5.
As an integral function, I hope a fix is on the way.

Got it, the page specified as the newsletter plugin page should only have [newsletter], and it changes depending on how it is accessed.
I don’t need a [newsletter_profile] shortcode as it is all done by the newsletter page.

Found the issue, it was database related.
I (as an enthusiastic amateur) did not realise the importance of the character set and collation.
I had an error in the debug saying that there was a collation mismatch, so I changed the database to the one collation, and entered that collation in the wp-config file. However, I entered the collation in the character set section, so it was not the correct setting.
After turning on debug the error was made clear.
