Thanks for all your help – so the www version of my site is apparently down to a SSL certificate mismatch which I’m checking with my host. However I did want to come back on the other error I was experiencing when trying to publish a post.

I tried to save posts using the browser install of WordPress and that didn’t work either, with me getting a “failed to insert post” error. In the end I worked out through sheer trial and error that the problem only seemed to occur if I had typed an emoji character in the post. Removing any emojis allowed me to save drafts and publish as normal. Uploading posts from Ulysses the third party app also worked if I removed any emoji.

I have used emojis in my posts before so not sure why this is now an issue but it seemed to have fixed the problem for me! Thank you again for your help.

Hi Jan, thanks so much for the response and for letting me know about the site being offline. That only seems to be the case with www. in front of the domain so I’ll get that checked out.

I’ve actually hired someone to check the other problem out for me so will report back if it gets fixed or once I get a chance to check out the logs. Thanks again!

Just posting some further information in case anyone is able to help:

In summary, my issue is that third party apps don’t seem to be able to post to my self-hosted WordPress site. The WordPress app generates an “Post Failed to Upload” error, even when it’s a simple text post. The WordPress app is connected to my site as I can view all my media within it, upload media and see installed plugins and their status. I can upload images too from the app and they save to my media library as you’d expect. It only appears to be uploading / publishing a post that isn’t working.

I’ve inserted two screenshots below – one showing the banner saying post failed to upload, the other one showing a list of posts with the top one saying upload failed. Any help would be much appreciated.

    • My URL: https://www.simonssite.com
    • WordPress mobile app version: 23.81
    • App platform: iPad OS
    • Platform version: iPad OS 17.3
    • Device model: iPad Pro
    • Troubleshooting steps I’ve tried: validating xml-rpc (seems to be ok), disabling all plugins (no difference)

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me Esmi!

There’s no tag.php template in the new theme. I’d basically used the wp-cumulus plug in on a normal template page to help list the categories in my archive, as the theme didn’t come with easy access to searching archives.

(I’m trying to put the City of Dreams theme in place as my new theme)

I’ll have a look at my category.php file and compare it to that which I’m currently using at the moment, but I think something in the template is overwriting the archive results page as something showing tag results flashes up very briefly before being replaced by the blank home page.

Do you know which page template a search / category / date search would usually throw up? It feels like that may be what’s being overwritten somewhere.

    Thanks for your help!

Ok, for anyone else with this issue, I found the answer here after a bit of solid Googling!

Can someone help with where the get avatar code please? I’m not sure what exactly I should be putting where (although I presume it’s somewhere in comments.php)

Wow – great response time! That’s what I thought, but it’s cool to have it confirmed by an expert. Thanks !

I managed to get it fixed – I think it was a problem with a post – I deleted that and the sidebar moved back.

I appreciate you pointing out all those errors. I might have a look at them however unfortunately I don’t really have a clue where to begin to even find where to go and fix them.

Well found the problem. I’m not technical at all but just turned out my FTP hadn’t uploaded all my files – just in case anyone else has had the same problem, it’s worth checking it out!
