Hans, I use Wordfence in conjunction with CloudFlare. Wordfence identifies bad IPs then I add them to CloudFlare which blocks them at source from every website in my network. CloudFlare allows ranges of IPs to be blocked, and I often invoke this if I see several bad IPs in the same range. Unfortunately, it does not allow blocking by hostname, but it is usually quite easy to identify all IP ranges for a hostname, then block these ranges. Even better is the country blocking feature in CloudFlare. That does not block the country completely, but it does present a Captcha screen that blocks most spammers, and allows you to whitelist acceptable individual addresses.

There is another plugin that automatically adds Wordfence blocked IP addresses to CloudFlare, but I prefer to do this manually so I can be happy I’m not blocking genuine traffic.

If you do use CloudFlare, be sure to add the CloudFlare plugin to WordPress.

I can confirm that this problem was due to my oversight in failing to install the CloudFlare plugin. Now safe and fast due to Wordfence+CloufFlare combo: in fact, faster than 93% of all tested websites, according to Pingdom.

@damoncloudflare You, sir, are a genius. The one thing I overlooked was CloudFlare plugin installation. Now installed and Wordfence reactivated.

I hope this solves my problem, and I will report back soon to confirm or otherwise.

I need to slightly correct my review, where I said Gator Cache saved just under 1 second on page load time. I’ve just summarized my test results properly, and the fall was from an average of 3.75 seconds, down to 2.6 seconds.

Gator Cache has single-handedly shaved over 1 second from my page load time times as measured by Pingdom.

I agree. It’s vital to use child themes to avoid losing customisations when upgrading. This plugin makes it very, very, easy.

My solution was to immediately delete flutter – I really see no point in using badly behaved plugins.

Pods is much better for WordPress CMS. It has very strong data management, so additional content and write panels are much more powerful.
