The issue has been resolved, but I still am not exactly sure what caused it.

I had two users on my WP blog. When I deleted the 2nd user I believe it deleted all of the pages which were created/modified by them (not just any posts). Hence why some pages were showing and others were not.

This is only my guess, but worth considering if you are in the same situation.

    Hi Esmi,

I appeciate all your help so far.

Just wanted to ask, will resetting these permalinks have any adverse effects on my site or on the Google rankings???

I noticed that only a few of my pages are actually accessible after entering the url for instance “www.domain.com/about/” or “www.domain.com/blog” and everything appears to be ok within those few pages, except the menu/nav bar has completely disappeared apart from one button (“about”) and I can navigate around a few of the pages using hyperlinks within the page content itself. However when i try to access the homepage for instance I’m right back at the beginning – to a 404 error.

This is very strange. The content is ok, blog posts are ok, comments still there, tweets are updating as they should be, but the navigation has mostly disappeared…

Does this indicate anything obvious to you? Do you still think changing the permalinks will help this? I’ve built a pretty good ranking on Google and don’t want to jeopardize this in any way if i can help it.

    Regards,
    Sheenao

    Hi Esmi,

Thanks, I’ve tried that. Increased it to 256M but still no luck?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks ??

    Hi Esmi,

I did what you suggested. Deactivating all of the plugins didn’t get the site back up and running so i started activating them all separately one at a time. I was thrown an error with regard to one plugin in particular “WordPress Backup” (https://www.blogtrafficexchange.com/wordpress-backup/).

    The error was as follows:

Fatal Error: allowed memory size of xxxxx exhausted…..ref line 178

This php code line reads as follows (marked with *):

    if(!empty($backup_email)) {
    *** $file_size = bte_wb_format_size(filesize($file_path)); ***
    $file_data = chunk_split(base64_encode(file_get_contents($file_path)));

Do you think this could be causing every page to display a 404 error? If i can find out how to increase the limit do you think this would fix the problem…don’t know where to do this though ??

    Thanks

I have tried de-activating the plugins separately but that doesn’t seem to help.

Does it make any difference if they are all deactivated at the same time and then re-activated one at a time?

    Hi @esmi,

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I will try de-activating the plugins first and see if that works. Just a bit weary about doing so in case it causes any issues with the site once it’s back up and running ??

On another note, do you know of any companies/people who offer professional web troubleshooting services to fix any website issues etc. Would like to know for future reference where I can go to to get help/assistance with such issues.

    Thanks

    Hi Esmi,

Yes I am – W3 Total Cache – but the problem seems to have resolved itself. Took about 20mins or so, but it appears as it should now.

    Thanks for your reply though!

Ok, I am beginning to think it was not only my site that was hacked but also everyone else on my shared hosting account as the hosting provider themselves have appeared to have updated the php files (before I had a chance to inform them of the issue).

Will update my progress for the benefit of others…

    Thanks thisisedie,

Yes that pop up virus scan thing happened to me today, right about the time that my site was hacked (according to the timestamps of when the php files were last updated).

Any ideas about how i can solve this issue? Will restoring the files with clean previous backups and importing a database backup work?

    I’d appreciate your reply.

    Kind Regards,
    Sheena
