Found the answer myself – needed to add some code in content-front.php.

Still would appreciate some ideas.

I suspect WP is not finding the template. I tried not using a child theme, but using a complete copy of Pique (just renamed the package to PiquePlay) with the additional template file. Still the same result – no children are shown when assigning the Grid2 template. Everything works fine when using the standard Grid template. The same php code in both templates, so why is one working and the other is not?
