That’s nice when you control the server but most of us are tenants on a bigger system and the php version is what it is. I’d be happy to go back to akismet 2.5.3. Using older versions isn’t mentioned on the Akismet site so I shall just have to not use it at all.

In reply to: category errorJust found the problem. The category War had Science Fiction as its parent. I made it separate and that solved it.

In reply to: file permissions for installAnswered my own question. Initially with an install file all permissions are rwx and those permissions are changed by install to the final value. Don’t try to move the install file using a thumb drive as that seems to mess up the permissions.

In reply to: 3.0 upgrade now my New Post links all show a blank pageI ran into a problem when I loaded wp-admin and wp-includes from the latest build. When you move files about sometimes the file permissions get changed. That was my problem. The wp-admin folder had no permissions for group or world use. I added the r and x permissions for read and execute and I was up and running and able to add posts for the first time in 5 days. Whew! My thanks for the good info in the threads.

In reply to: install doesn't happenI should add depending on which browser I use I get a 403 or 404 error. The file isn’t protected that I can see when I check via the file manager at my host which is earthlink.

In reply to: New wp-admin & wp-includes creates login problemAfter the automatic update to 3 I could log on as admin and see my dashboard. My site was up. I just couldn’t do adds. I’d get a blank screen. Reading various threads it appeared that replacing wp-admin and wp-includes with the most recent build would solve that.
With either the new or old wp-admin & wp-includes I can no longer log on to wp-admin.
How do I activate re-install?
Is there a file I can look at that contains the version and build number?
I should also mention that Earthlink is my host.Forum: Networking WordPress
In reply to: 3.0.1 Earthlink 5.0.2 PHPI got the latest versions of wp-admin and wp-includes. I saved the existing files. But after I loaded the new files I got a 403 forbidden error after logging into wp-admin. I restored the original files and still have the error. Am I missing a step?

In reply to: Upgraded to 3.0 — Observing Weird ProblemsI had this problem back on 2.8.7 and there was a line of code I per the forum added that made the php version number a don’t care. Wish I could find my notes.

In reply to: Upgrade to 3.0 problem: can’t edit pages from DashboardI did my upgrade to WP3 on 7/8 and most of the posts in this string predate that. I have my site on Earthlink and I’ve read about those problems on a closed string.
I can edit existing posts but get a blank screen when I try to add. The command in the browser is to admin-post-new but I have only an admin-post.
Where would I go to get just a file or a folder? Do I have to download the entire WordPress program to get then?
