i realize this is an old thread… but i have a similar question, how do i change the look of the widgets, i checked my functions.php and all it contains is this:

widget placement is resolved by using another theme…. odd since it worked with the previous theme for a year or so.

still searching for a vB 4 style.

i had the same issue, and was advised (here on the forum) to turn off ALL plugins and turn them back on one by one to determine which one might be causing the issue….

in my case the culprit was Twitter Tools.
