Phillip at WPMUDEV helped me out. He suggested adding the following bit of code in the visual editor of each post where I wanted the excerpt to end:

<!–more Read more –>

From there, in your theme settings / customization, there is no need to select excerpts and no need for Advanced Excerpt.

And “read more” can be replaced with other phrases, such as “continue reading”, etc.

Any updates on this? I actually had the same thing happen on my latest post (though not any previous posts). I’m using the twenty fourteen theme and already had Advanced Excerpt installed. https://www.tennisessities.com

I forgot to mention that I have already selected “full width page” for this page, but that doesn’t seem to have had any impact.

I ended up contacting Hello Bar support and they were able to fix whatever was wrong.

My hosting company was able to both get my site up and running again and add my domain name as the URL (vs. the IP addres). However, the resolution required moving me back to a single site install.

just to be clear, when i say the “site is not loading”, I mean that if i type https://www.tennisessities.com or tennisessities.com into my browser, nothing happens. links to specific pages and posts from facebook or other sources work, but not entering the domain name. hope that helps.
