I’ve had some strange experiences with the admin of upload images in NextGen Gallery and found it was a compatibility issue with wptouch iphone theme 1.8.9.1. Once I deactivated that plugin the admiin of nextgen worked with no problems.
I’m not saying that your situation is a compatibility issue, but it might be worth a look.
