PayPal Merchant Technical Support advised:
Viewing the logged console errors, there is not a secure payment token passed to the checkout nor is there any “value” – meaning an amount that is passed. Hence, this is the reason the window closes.
(I am not sure how to share a screen shot of the log here).
With this additional information, would you have any advise for how to fix the issue?
