In reply to: Links to pages from home page bring up 404 error.ok, I managed to solve the problem. It was necessary to change the permissions in the htaccess file to allow WP to write to the file. Then, when I reset the permerlinks back to ‘post name’ the htaccess file was updated automatically.

Forum: Plugins
In reply to: Plugins dissapearedThanks for the advice esmi, this is helpful in getting the plugins reinstated. However, I’m curious to know what might have caused this. I have this and a few other WP sites and never this kind of problem before. I wonder if the latest auto update to WP 3.9.1 could have caused this. Apart from posting, there have been no other changes to the site for some time.
Picking up on your 1st point, how would I recognise a “problematic plugin”?
Forum: Everything else WordPress
In reply to: new user registrationOk, I’ve now worked out what has been happening. By default the WP software allows anyone to register as a subscriber via a link under the domainname.com/wp-admin/login box. I cannot immagine why anone would want to do this because as a mere ‘subscriber’ you do not get access to anything other than a personal profile page where you can provide details such as the domain of your website. Maybe that’s why they register to get back links to their site for SEO purposes. Anyway, as Odel pointed out, you can disable this default setting by simply unchecking the box next to ‘anyone can register’ located in Settings>General on the Dashboard.
Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: re-installing WPok…problem solved by live chat with Hostgator who host my domain. The guy there was very helpful and cleared the problem for me there and then. Apparently, Fantastico (program I used to install WP from my domain manager)can be confused when deleting files.
Thanks for all your comments.
