I though the codex does give good advice for a manual update I am just not techie-confident enough to give it a go.

I’ve been using WordPress for a couple of years now and can’t remember how it was originally installed! … that said I shall contact my host and pass on the info.

Not being a techie I am not comfortable doing a manual install but hopefully it won’t come to that ??

OK, now I successfully used auto update to update some plugins successfully … but trying to do the core update gave me this:

What is going on?

I have still having this problem. I can’t use automatic install for anything be it wordpress itself or just a plugin. All very frustrating and baffling

I am a non-techie so I was delighted when WordPress introduced the automatic update facility from the dashboard. I have been using it fine no problem, until vers 3.0 & 3.0.1

I get similar error message to many people in this thread. I have decided to wait until WordPress get their act together and fix the problem before I try anything else.

Hmm… ledfrog I tried what you suggest and alas it still didn’t work … I am beginning to wonder if I should just bite the bullet and try a manual install despite my lack of techie know how?

OK, so Fantastico deluxe finally had version 3.0 so I updated that way … and I still get the same notice/error message as jaksalee, and I also get the ‘Could not create directory. /public_html’ when trying to update themes.

Hmm… I did the automatic update and it partially worked, that is to say the dashboard looks different and it does say I am using version 3.0, but the problem is it also says an update failed and needs to be run again.

All my themes and plugins are up to date and working fine. When I try to run the automatic WordPress core update I get an error message saying:
Could not create directory.: /public_html

This is all very confusing. I have used cpanel/Fantastico Deluxe to update WordPress but it is not showing version 3.0 as an option.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I do not know what to do. It is not as though I can upload a plugin to fix this as I can’t access my plugins at all.

Since upgrading to 2.8.1 I not only don’t have the plugin tab, but I don’t have any of the admin menus (eg. settings, options etc.) either!

I am having the same problem with 2.8 as so many other WordPress users are.

Clearly the time to fix 2.8 is here!

I am having the same problem as jikoyster and duemer. There clearly is a bug in the latest version!
